Snap Lake Mine Closure – BGM Liner Supply & Installation

De Beers Canada Inc. – Northwest Territories

Canadian Erosion & Containment Ltd. (CEC) was selected to deliver the full supply and installation of Bituminous Geomembrane (BGM) liner systems as part of the Snap Lake Mine Closure Project. Located 220 km northeast of Yellowknife, this remote northern project required specialized logistics, technical precision, and proven cold-weather installation experience.

Technical Highlights

  • Work executed during northern winter-season to ensure proper welding and material performance.

  • ES3 BGM liner selected for enhanced durability; required specialized handling due to increased thickness and shorter roll lengths.

  • Strict compliance with all health, safety, and environmental protocols.

  • Seam welding and testing performed in accordance with project specifications and industry best practices.

Execution in Remote Conditions

Operating in the NWT’s remote environment required:

  • Careful logistical planning for material delivery and crew mobilization.

  • Coordination with weekly charter flights, site accommodations, and staged equipment.

  • Constant monitoring of weather, temperature, and wind to ensure safe and high-quality welds.

  • Collaboration with the prime contractor to maintain schedule despite northern climate constraints.

Despite these challenges, CEC delivered a reliable, high-performance liner system designed to support the long-term environmental closure of the site
